10th Havana Biennial

April 21, 2009

The Havana Biennial of Contemporary Art just wrapped up down in Cuba and there were some great things going on down there this year. This year also marks the 50th year of the Cultural Revolution in Cuba and seems more symbolic than ever as we stand on the brink of changing times with the relations and restrictions between our 2 countries. Also this year is the first time in over 20 years that New York galleries were represented at the Biennial, and 28 travelled to be part of this historical occasion. Here are some stand-out pieces below.

“Caja Negra” by Duvier Del Dago Fernandez. Hologram projected into disused Cuban Paramilitary shooting range from the 70’s by constructing with string, then lit with ultra violet light. Detail shots below.

“Memoria & Memory” installation by Jose Emilio Fuentes Fonseca at the Plaza de la Revolution
