Ten Photographs by James Maher

FaceTweet it!

We came in touch with James Maher, and we loved his photograph making abilities so we decided to give you a taste of his work. He has some incredible street photography as well as scenic shots of New York. You can check out more of his work on his website.

James Maher is a fine art and studio photographer, a retoucher, and a web designer based in New York City.

James credits his inspiration for photography to his love for the city and its endless supply of personalities to capture and streets to explore. He enjoys the balance that photography provides between the creative and technical sides, as well as the constant problem solving and learning that it involves.

Growing up immersed in the world of computers, his pursuits of both web design and Photoshop came as natural extensions to his photography. He studied them intensely to expand his abilities to create and enhance his images and to market his work, and eventually realized that he could offer these services to help others.

James originally received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with a focus in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Photography and Photoshop began as a hobby, but he decided to pursue them after college once he realized that a career in math was not for him.

He went on to study photography and retouching at the International Center for Photography (ICP) and the School of Visual Arts (SVA), and supplemented his education by assisting commercial photographers in New York.

He now splits his time between his personal photography and a variety of freelance work.

That last image is just sublime. I’d seen his work before but never knew his name (blame StumbleUpon and Tumblr), so thank you!

What cool images — give a nice flavor of the city and people in it. Thanks for sharing these great images.

Fantastic! I love the man dressed in binbags – some may say that he is yelping, whereas I like to think he is enjoying the rain and has his mouth open singing!

Beautifully stark – each tells a story. The first one looks like and reminds me of me. Multi tasking, not stopping, snacking on the move.

Yay – finally some good photos that I stumble across. There is a lot of crap that makes it into the wordpress tagged “photography” blogs… this post was awesome.

Interesting shots! Indeed each picture has it’s own story. I’d go for the Black and White photos, Black and White are the colors of photography as they say šŸ™‚
